Being able to observe and engage with nature requires us to slow down, look and listen. This task is not always easy. And for our students who are living hurried lives, it can be unfamiliar, and unsettling.
I recently welcomed a new group of students I will be working with once a week for 40 minutes. At first, they were excited to be outside, thinking recess may have been extended. I wanted them to shift their focus from raucous outdoor play and invite them to use their senses to notice what was around them.
I read The Quiet Book, by Deborah Underwood at the beginning of our session. After reading the book, they began to focus their noticing on what they were hearing. One student became still enough to catch this dragonfly!

Try this out with your students and wait to be amazed at what they will notice … once they take a moment to slow down … look … and listen!
